Cocaine Treatment

Cocaine Treatment

Cocaine is a highly addictive drug that can permanently alter the course of one’s life if not properly met head on and dealt with. Our cocaine treatment program doesn’t end with detox. Abuse of cocaine leads to a marked physical dependency on the drug, and cocaine treatment programs require significant medical care for the detox process, as well as other assistance in confronting altered brain chemistry as a result of use and dangerous social habits.

At Lumiere Healing Centers, cocaine treatment doesn’t end with a simple detox program though. We provide all of our patients with continuing support as they transition from detox into a post-detox environment. During this period of time our cocaine treatment program transitions the focus for the patient to understanding triggers, reintegrating into society, participating in continued rehab therapies, and staying the course long term in our alumni programs.

Understanding Triggers

One of the greatest challenges facing any patient post detox is the potential for triggers to pop up and lure them back into a cycle of cocaine use and abuse. Triggers can be simple factors, or incredibly complex processes that result in a craving for drug use. By better understanding those triggers as part of the post-detox process, patients are better prepared to meet those challenges head on and avoid the potential for a relapse.

Cravings represent a programmed response to signals in any given environment that are connected to previous cocaine use. Triggers are often vivid memories of the effects that cocaine use had on the brain and are brought about by your immediate surroundings, or even a fleeting thought or moment in time.

As mentioned above, triggers range from simple to complex in nature. They can consist of general clues that elicit a memory in the brain or they can consist of a very specific set of events that commonly took place during cocaine use. There are a handful of warning signs, or symptoms, we help our patients learn to recognize that are associated with triggers. These physical and mental symptoms include, but are not necessarily limited to:

  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased sweat gland activity
  • Stomach cramping
  • General sensation of invorgation
  • Heightened anticipation/anxiety
  • Increased awareness

Triggers and cravings can occur anywhere from a few hours following discontinuation of cocaine use, to several days or even weeks. That’s why it is so important for patients in post detox to understand triggers and work through cravings. Most individuals in post detox from cocaine treatment will encounter cravings and triggers, which is why it’s vital they know how to recognize the signs and work through the cravings.

Individualized Treatment

No two individuals respond the same to cocaine use and abuse, which means the detox and post-detox process for those two individuals must be different as well. How your body and mind respond to cocaine abuse and behave during post detox can vary based upon the following examples:

  • Unique body composition and rate of metabolism
  • Particular cocaine used and dosages taken
  • How long cocaine was abused
  • Presence of other addictions occurring alongside cocaine use

Because no two people experience cocaine abuse in the same manner, post detox measures must be individualized to each patient. For most, this includes treatment through individual therapy sessions. Individual therapy sessions with Lumiere Healing Centers includes a meeting with your individual therapist. Patients dive deep into the core reasons behind addiction and work to address those issues in an effort to move forward effectively without relapsing into cocaine use again in the future.

During the course of individual therapy sessions, patients work with their therapist to:

  • Identify when they began using cocaine and what led them to abuse the drug in the first place.
  • Work to develop strategies that help them direct their time and focus on getting involved in new hobbies or interests.
  • Cultivate time management skills that allow them to better use their time so there is less opportunity to think about and engage in relapses.
  • Most importantly, they work to identify triggers, deal with those situations when they come up, and plan for the various tempting situations they could potential encounter.

With greater preparation, patients can move through post-detox life with a plan of action that can be used to return to a productive lifestyle and avoid relapse.

Group Therapy

At Lumiere Healing Centers, we also encourage our patients to pursue group therapy sessions during post detox. During these sessions patients have the opportunity to meet with others who are recovering from the same type of addition and may face the same situations in life. Many post-detox individuals find it comforting to know they are not alone in their struggles, and benefit from a sense of solace as they hear the stories of others who have struggled with addiction and recovery. Through group therapy, patients gain a sense of community support that is vital to the overall recovery process.

Family Therapy

In addition to attending group therapy, we encourage all of our post-detox patients to consider participation in family therapy sessions. Family members of those struggling with addiction have, in many cases, experienced the highs and lows of addiction as they watched their loved one struggle through the process before finally accepting help and cocaine treatment.

Lumiere Healing Centers believes in the role family can play in the post-detox process, which is why we encourage patients and families to attend. Family therapy sessions remain focused on the patient and help family units to:

  • Identify interaction patterns that can be harmful during the post-detox process
  • Recognize behaviors such as enabling or blaming that derail the post-detox process
  • Learn, and practice, new ways to communicate with one another that are more effective
  • Understand how to alter the family dynamic to enable renewed trust and respect between all parties.

The role of family therapy sessions is to help everyone involved better understand how the family dynamic and interaction patterns can be changed going forward to produce a more supportive environment post detox that is helpful for the patient, without becoming a situation where enabling occurs.

Become a Lifer with Our Alumni Program

Follow discharge from cocaine treatment, Lumiere Healing Centers welcomes all post-detox patients to take party in our alumni programs. As scary as it was the moment you arrived at our facility, leaving can be just as overwhelming. We’ve developed several alumni programs designed to ensure not only short-term gains, but long-term success post detox. The goal is to enable patients to lead sober lifestyles following the conclusion of initial cocaine treatment.

Our alumni groups meet on a weekly basis, with a focus on giving back by motivating and supporting other individuals still undergoing treatment for cocaine addiction. Our alumni are encouraged to participate in social activities with other individuals in the treatment process, such as attending movie night. The alumni program includes access to our exclusive social network, where patients in post detox can share encourage stories and keep others updated on upcoming events at the center.

The road through the post-detox process is a long one, but it does not have to be traveled alone. Lumiere Healing Centers have the resources to support patients every step of the way through post detox to ensure a stable, sober lifestyle is possible in the future.
